When it comes to creating secure and resilient animal and bird enclosures, KnitMesh Technologies‘ Zoo and Aviary Mesh is a game-changer. This flexible barrier is designed to meet the needs of both the animals and the keepers, making it an ideal solution for a variety of applications.
Crafted from high-quality knitted wire mesh, primarily composed of 304 stainless steel, KnitMesh Technologies‘ Zoo and Aviary Mesh provides a durable and customisable option for enclosure barriers. The material, mesh type, and finish can all be tailored to fit specific customer specifications, ensuring a perfect fit for any application.
One of the key advantages of this mesh is its remarkable lightweight nature, proven to be over 80% lighter than traditional weld-mesh solutions. This feature not only makes installation and maintenance easier but also contributes to a more cost-effective and efficient solution for enclosure construction.
Available in rolls of up to 50m in length and widths ranging from 0.5m to 2m, the mesh offers flexibility in terms of installation. Its malleability allows for easy moulding, wrapping, and stretching around various structures, making it a versatile option for enclosures of different shapes and sizes. Additionally, the mesh can be joined using a variety of methods, further enhancing its adaptability to diverse enclosure designs.
Whether the goal is to contain specific animals or birds within an enclosure or to keep pests and predators at bay, KnitMesh Technologies‘ Zoo and Aviary Mesh provides a reliable and efficient solution. Its durability, customisation options, and ease of installation make it an invaluable asset for creating secure and comfortable environments.
Birds of Eden is a renowned free-flight bird sanctuary located in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa. Spanning over a gorge of indigenous forest, the sanctuary covers a vast area of 23,000m2, making it the largest dome of its kind in the world. With the purpose of providing a safe haven for African birds, miniature monkeys, and the rehabilitation of pet birds, the sanctuary is home to over 3,500 birds.
One of the key requirements of the Birds of Eden sanctuary was the need for a permeable cover that would allow natural elements like sunlight, wind, and rain to penetrate and maintain the local climactic conditions. However, the cover needed to restrict the escape of birds and miniature monkeys while preventing the entry of unwanted pests or visitors, including reptiles, small mammals, and larger primates. The previous cover, made of 25mm weld-mesh, had rusted and required a corrosion-resistant replacement.
KnitMesh Technologies took on the task of developing a custom solution for the sanctuary’s needs. Given the immense scale of the project, the company had to innovate and design new knitting machines capable of producing heavy-duty stainless steel wire in large socks of up to 2m circumference.
The newly designed knitting machines enabled KnitMesh Technologies to create rolls of 2m wide mesh by slitting the knitted socks, which were later welded together on-site to form the canopy of the sanctuary. Stainless steel material and wire diameter were carefully selected to optimise the strength-to-weight ratio and ensure maximum corrosion resistance.
By replacing the original weld-mesh with KnitMesh Technologies‘ Zoo and Aviary Mesh, the weight of the covering was significantly reduced from 88 tons to just 8 tons. This reduction in weight relieved a significant amount of strain on the supporting structure of the dome. The new mesh provided the necessary permeability to maintain the desired environmental conditions within the sanctuary while effectively preventing the escape of birds and miniature monkeys, as well as the entry of unwanted pests or visitors.
