KnitMesh Technologies is pleased to announce that Josh Reid has joined the team as Manufacturing Projects Manager. In this new role, Josh will be responsible for leading and coordinating manufacturing projects, ensuring the seamless production of the company’s high-quality knitted wire mesh products.
In a recent interview with Josh, we delved into his background and discussed his new role at KnitMesh Technologies.
Q&A with Josh Reid
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your professional background?
So, I have been working in manufacturing for over 13 years. My previous role was with a textile manufacturer that produced custom bags, primarily for the medical industry. I joined the company right out of university to gain work experience on the shop floor, then moved on to the R&D department before becoming a Product Designer.
During this position, I was encouraged to pursue a master’s degree in Product Design, which gave me a solid understanding of product development and technical manufacturing.
Following my master’s degree, I worked my way up to Operations Manager and then Head of Manufacturing for both UK and international operations. During this time, I completed my Black Belt Lean Six Sigma training to improve efficiency and business operations.
I am a big advocate of technology and Industry 4.0, also known as the fourth industrial revolution, in manufacturing. Industry 4.0 is driving a significant shift in how manufacturing and industrial processes are designed and managed in the digital age. It allows businesses to move forward with integrated systems that can promote transparency, efficiency, and informed decision-making. The future of manufacturing with Industry 4.0 excites me because the possibilities are endless, especially given the emerging technology.
Q: Could you talk about some of the recent projects you have been involved in?
A few recent major projects I have worked on include finding and implementing a new CAD/CAM design and cutting system to increase efficiency. I also made several development and process changes to our ERP system.
I am passionate about continuous improvement and seeing the positive results of both small and large improvements. Particularly when led by the shop floor, whose wealth of experience can generate ideas based on firsthand knowledge.
Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in manufacturing?
After graduating at 21, I am not afraid to admit that I was a little lost and eager to find my calling. My initial work experience in an industrial manufacturing environment inspired me. I was blown away by the time-served skill sets and processes that produced such polished products so quickly and in such large quantities.
To this day, I am still fascinated by factories and industrial processes. I love watching “Inside The Factory” on BBC.
I am a firm believer in British manufacturing and optimistic about the future. I am hopeful that more industries can be re-shored as technological advancements and increased manufacturing efficiency outweigh labour and import costs. Not to mention our country’s growing reputation for quality!
Q: What attracted you to join KnitMesh Technologies?
After reading about the company’s knitted wire mesh capabilities and impressive portfolio of diverse customers and industries, I was very interested in the position, especially given the current period of growth and investment.
When I was first shown around the site and met the team, I got a great vibe and knew it was somewhere I could see myself growing.
Q: What are your key responsibilities as a Manufacturing Projects Manager at KnitMesh Technologies?
My role is to manage and lead manufacturing projects, and I will work with various teams across the organisation to complete them on time and within budget. I will be working to implement modern manufacturing management and control systems based on Industry 4.0 and artificial intelligence principles. This will better position the company to deal with the increasing complexity of our product line and the high levels of growth we are experiencing.
My first two projects are focused on real-time data capture within the manufacturing process, which will improve decision making, and new demand forecasting systems to increase efficiency.
The role also includes continuous improvement initiatives, establishing new manufacturing locations, collaborating with customers, and developing further decision-making processes.
Q: What excites you most about the projects you will oversee at KnitMesh Technologies?
What excites me the most is the positive impact the projects will have on various aspects of the business. I am also looking forward to working on new systems and technologies to help the business grow.
Also, having previously worked for a SME, I value the commercial drive needed and the ability to see an order from beginning to end under one roof. I am looking forward to doing it again at KnitMesh Technologies.
Q: What advice would you give to aspiring Manufacturing Managers looking to follow a similar career path?
I would suggest taking advantage of every development opportunity available and establishing meaningful business relationships with colleagues, customers, and suppliers.
Q: Outside of work, what are some of your hobbies and interests?
First and foremost, I love travelling and experiencing different cultures. Last year, I visited 11 countries! I also enjoy skiing, despite being new to the sport. I also cycled to work at my previous job and hope to cycle to KnitMesh Technologies as well.
I am also a keen baker who enjoys trying out new and challenging recipes. I recently had a go at sourdough bread!
Finally, I have a Welsh Collie called “Lad” who needs at least three walks per day, so rain or shine, I walk the dog. I also have a cat called “Poppy”.
Q: And finally, if you had to pick one superpower, what would it be and how would you use it at work?
Just like Mel Gibson in the 2001 romcom “What Women Want”, the ability to know not only the thoughts and feelings of women, but of all people. It would provide insight into the concerns, likes, and dislikes of customers and colleagues.
